But pastors and leaders in the church should and must teach on the blessing of giving and generosity.
The reality is that giving is down across the board in evangelical churches. I’m sure there are many reasons for this:
- lower attendance
- giving to other organizations
- less institutional thinking
- the economy
But one more reason for lower giving amounts to our churches is little to no teaching on giving. I believe this is especially true in younger churches. Perhaps younger pastors grew up in churches that were overly legalistic about the “tithe.” Perhaps they are fearful of getting accused of prosperity teaching.
Nonetheless, let me encourage you pastor to not steer away from the beautiful and principled subject of freewill giving from Holy Scripture. Not only do we see an authoritative directive from God’s Word about giving but there is also corresponding message of blessing. God does love a cheerful giver. It is more blessed to give than receive.
So sure, contextualize your teaching about money and giving for millennials and generation Z. But do teach on giving; preach on giving. Yes it may help your church budget and ability to do more ministry. But the bigger matter is that you are shepherding your people toward greater joy, blessing, and liberty in their own lives. Some of your people will never grow, never really experience freedom in their walk with Christ until they learn the blessing of giving generously. And it’s your job to teach them.
